A Guide to Instrument Servicing & Repairs

The Workshop at Dawkes Music currently employs eight professional repair staff with a combined repairing experience of over 70 years. Our newest member of staff, Adrian works in our Brass Repair Department. He has over 25 years of experience working as a professional Brass Instrument Repairer.

Free 1st year Check over:
All instruments bought from us are entitled to a free check over at the end of their first year: - Check padding and regulation & adjust as required.
Checkdown:
For instruments up to 3 years old or those having had a service within 2 years(*).
Where possible without dismantling: check instrument for leaks, re-seat pads and regulate to playing order. (* depending on amount of use).
Service:
Dismantle; clean body and keywork; re-seat pads; check corks and springs; re-assemble; regulate and lubricate.
Re-pad:
As the 'Service' option above plus the replacing of all the pads.
On-the-spot Repairs:
Emergency Repairs and Adjustments can be undertaken during normal shop hours subject to work in hand. Any work will be charged at our normal rate of £35 per hour plus cost of materials. Minimum charge £20.00
Booking in System:
With our booking in system we can repair your instrument wherever possible, when you want.
For most repairs you can book your instrument in for a specific day, deliver it to us the day before, and collect it the day after.
Spare Parts:
Our workshop is stocked with an extensive range of parts for most currently available Woodwind and Brass instruments, combined with the back up service of our sister company Windcraft, we should be able to help you with any eventuality from a missing screw to a new joint.

Specialist Repairs
As well as general repair work, we can also carry out specialist work to suit your individual needs, from repositioning a Clarinet thumbrest or shortening a barrel to keywork making and alteration.
Having problems with your mouthpiece and intonation?
Our on site mouthpiece specialist Professor Anton Weinberg has extensive knowledge of mouthpieces ligatures & reeds from a professional musicians perspective, and so can solve many playing problems you may have.

Please note that the prices shown here are a selection for guidance and are based on basic work performed without any problems occurring. Older, damaged, or polishing of Silver Plated instruments will require more work and so will incur additional cost at out standard hourly rate. Some older or damaged instruments may not be economical to repair and spare parts are not always available.
