More information on the Flute

There are many flutes in the flute family: Piccolo, C flute, Alto flute, Bass flute, Contra Alto flute and Contra Bass flute, to name a few.

As a student starting the flute you would begin on a standard concert flute in the key of C (we call it the Standard Flute) and, depending on your size, either play a curved or straight head flute.

Different variations of flutes have been around for many years and found all over the world. From a flute made from an animal's tusk to a wooden panpipe like flute, they have all developed over time. Craftsman and flautist Theobald Boehm invented the flute keywork system that we play on today.

When experimenting with materials he tried silver, gold, nickel and grenadilla. Many flutes can still be found in all these materials but the standard student flute will be a silver plated instrument.

The flute is a very versatile instrument, and can be heard in all different genres of music including Classical, Jazz, Folk, Pop and Latin. Flautists, such as James Galway, have made the flute well known in the classical world and Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) for his rock style flute playing.

The Piccolo is exactly one octave higher in pitch than the flute. Is sits at the top of the sound in an orchestra or band. The fingering is exactly the same as the standard flute except its lowest note is D whereas on the flute it is C (normally!!).

The standard flute is pitched in the key of C. The instrument itself is divided into three different sections the head joint, body and footjoint. This is the most commonly used flute and is the flute beginners start on.

The Alto and Bass flutes are normally used in flute choirs or flute ensembles. The alto flute can also be found in jazz and pop, the Bass can also be used in some swing music and is featured heavily in some Bert Kaempfert Orchestra arrangements.
