More information on the Oboe
The modern oboe is usually first encountered in the symphony orchestra where it is both a prominent solo voice and has its own oboe section within the woodwind. The extensive history of the oboe and the extended family of oboes, today and historically, give the oboe a much more attractive and modern image than its more common classical activities imply.
The oboe is a conical woodwind instrument played with a double reed, just like its siblings. These are the oboe d’more (the alto oboe voice of the group), oboe da caccia, and the bass oboe (more a baritone oboe voice).
Importantly the oboe also has a most extensive history and repertoire in folk music world-wide. Each country demonstrating its own variations on the folk oboe design.
Film music has given the oboe and/or oboe siblings haunting and dramatic themes while pop music has also used the oboe extensively. Jazz equally has not missed the telling oboe sonorities: Yusef Lateef was a prominent jazz oboe soloist while the famous Paul Whiteman orchestra frequently availed itself of the oboe in its arrangements.
The student oboe has less keywork than many of the advanced professional oboe models and a good oboe teacher should always be consulted before purchasing or upgrading.
