The result of extensive research and testing with internationally renowned clarinettists the new BC1160L-2-0 Buffet Divine clarinet is at the pinnacle of clarinet design.
Utilising the same tone hole placement as the popular Buffet Tosca the new Divine is really more from the RC family of poly-cylindrical bore design. Various modifications in the bore have been made to enable a totally smooth transition between registers and an even scale across the whole range.
There are some exterior technical improvements as well including tone hole slots made from the Buffet Greenline material so as to avoid cracking or air leaks. You will also spot the standard metal rings on the joints have been replaced, these are now produced with a carbon wire which also helps the clarinet lose 60g in weight which can be felt in the flexibility of tone.
Interestingly Buffet have also used synthetic cork on the tenon joints, these should require no lubrication and should be less prone to needing replacing.
The Divine clarinet comes with 2 barrels, 66mm and 65mm so you have room to breathe in challenging tuning situations, the padding is a mix of Gore-Tex and cork which disable the usual stuffy notes and ensure a clean sound. It also benefits from the low F correction key, as on the Tosca.
Upon testing we have found the Divine clarinets to be luxurious and rich in tone. There is a certain authority to the sound and is akin to driving around in a Rolls Royce, refined power. The lead designer Paul Meyer has always produced instruments that feel great under the fingers and this Divine is no different, the references to the old Buffet Elite model are also evident and the application of the RC style bore really make this instrument stand out. Can it be worth the price? The only way to know is to come and try it.
Brilliant instrument, build quality is first class as you'd expect and the sound is incredible, rich full of sonority and intonation better than any instrument i've played thus far. Upgraded from RC professisonal clarinet and this new Devine is definitely a step up and in a different class!
It is so good that some of my technique will need to be changed, not as many throat notes need venting and the upper altissimo register responds without the Eb key being used for some notes - my brain now needs reprogramming to go back to simpler fingerings which may take a little while!
I personally would have preferred a slightly different style of case for the instrument, but the one provided is top quality if lacking a iittle on the internal storage for the bits and bobs we all carry around - may change the case purely out of personal taste. Over all this instrument is definitely worth the money and plays like a dream.
I've played clarinet for 35yrs starting on a Buffet B10 moving on to a Buffet E13 then a Conservatoire, a lovely instrument. Playing in orchestras the Buffet sound fitted well. I had an R13 until recently; another beautiful instrument that I had become accustomed to but I wanted to upgrade. The obvious choice was a Tosca, an instrument having many successful orchestral and soloist players recently adopting it.
But now there was also the Divine, Buffet's new top-of-the-range instrument.
It is a hybrid-RC bore, conical lower joint and poly-cylindrical upper bore.
The dilemma, do I get the Tosca or the Divine?
The answer seemed difficult; I had played the Tosca of friends. It was at this time I started to look at Internet sites, www.dawkes.co.uk had information about a number of instruments impartially. I ended up speaking to a very proficient and accomplished clarinettist. Having very useful discussion(s) and was coming basically to the final difficulty of Tosca vs Divine on trial for a week.
The intonation was so consistent throughout the registers, it had a darker sound to the R13, it was sublime. The benefits from the same tone hole placement as the Tosca giving great intonation in all registers. The improved bore helps register-crossing and freer blowing. The keywork layout enhances the clarinet’s ergonomics.
The Divine like the Tosca, is equipped with a low F/F# correction key and like many other professional instruments the Divine comes with two barrels - 65mm and 66mm.
It is made of high end unstained grenadilla wood but also has specific upper joint GreenLine toneholes to prevent cracking. No metal rings or bell ring on the Divine make the clarinet lighter, contributing to greater vibration. The use of synthetic tenons means no lubrication necessary.
The evolutionary aspects fuse new technical expertise with unparalleled craftsmanship.
