Bb Cornets

The Bb cornet is the most commonly played cornet, and is a close relative to the trumpet too. The Bb cornet has a pitch range that is the same as the trumpet, another reason the two instruments are often compared.

Compared to the Trumpet, the Cornet is more compact than the trumpet, and the cornet also has a wider bore. Whilst Bb cornets are found in many bands, orchestras and music, they're best known for their role in brass bands. In most brass bands, the Bb cornet is the most common instrument, and the most numerous too.. However, although the Bb cornet is the most common cornet, there is another member to this instrument family. As well as the Bb cornet, there is also the Eb Soprano Cornet - which is used commonly regarded as a specialist instrument for advanced players.

The Bb cornet for beginners

The Bb cornet is the most popular cornet choice for beginners, and it's a great instrument for any beginner wanting to take a step into the cornet family of instruments. Here at Dawkes we have a wide range of Bb cornets, with many choices for beginners.

The Bb cornet within the brass band

The Bb cornet is most commonly found in the brass band, where it plays a major part in producing the iconic sounds the brass band is known for, and the principal soprano voice. The cornet is actually the smallest instrument in a brass band, which makes it useful for transportation, and also make it popular with younger players too. The main tube has a conical bore, which is gradually tapered from the leadpipe to the bell. Just like the trumpet, sound is produced from the cornet when the players blows and vibrates their lips at the mouthpiece. Notes are then created by the players hands, which can manipulate the valves along the instruments.

The cornet within music

There have been many famous Bb cornet players throughout history, with some of the most notable cornet players being; Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke and King Oliver. There are many types of music that cornet players can enjoy playing, such as brass band music, military music, jazz and blues music.
