More information on the Saxophone

The saxophone (commonly mis-spelt as "saxaphone") was developed by Belgian born instrument maker Adolphe Sax. There are ten members in the saxophone family comprising of (smallest to largest): Sopranino sax (Eb), C Soprano sax, Soprano sax (Bb), F Mezzo-Soprano sax, Alto sax (Eb), C Melody sax, Tenor sax (Bb), Baritone sax (Eb), Bass sax (Bb-), and Contrabass saxophone.

Today the four most commonly used saxophones are the soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxes. All saxophones are written for in the treble clef.

Soprano sax

There are two types of soprano sax, straight and curved. Some manufacturers also offer two styles of crook, straight and curved. The unique tone of the soprano has the characteristics to imitate other instruments like the oboe, high strings and violin. The soprano is a specialist instrument, in a saxophone quartet it is comparable to a 1st violin in a string quartet. The fingering for all saxophones are mostly the same, some models of soprano feature an additional high G key.

Alto sax

Pitched a perfect 4th below the soprano (in Eb), the alto sax is the preferred instrument teachers recommend for students. Beginning pupils tend to have less intonation difficulties on the alto sax than they would if they started on the soprano.

Tenor sax

In the key of B flat (Bb), the tenor is pitched one octave below the soprano and a perfect 4th below the alto. Since the tenor is larger than the alto it is not always an appropriate instrument for young beginners, however, many alto students upgrade to the tenor sax. The tenor is also a good choice for adult beginners as the size difference is not so much an obstacle.

Baritone sax

Often called "bari sax" this sax is one of the larger instruments in the family. The bari is one octave below the alto and a perfect 4th below the tenor sax. Like the soprano sax the baritone is a specialist instrument requiring skill and discipline. Another distinguishing feature of most bari saxes is the additional low "A" key.
