The Orchestra
Most orchestras are comprised of four different groups of instruments. They include strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion. Even though all four groups of instruments support one another, the strings usually are the ‘stars of the show’. You’ll hear the violin, viola, cello, and double bass in most orchestras.
The Woodwinds
Woodwind instruments are tubes with keys (cap-covered holes) along the length. One end is covered by a mouthpiece, and the other end is left open.
Flute
The flute has enchanted humanity for thousands of years, and its sound has been given exquisite expression in classical music. Choose from flutes in C, alto and bass flutes, piccolos, and plastic flutes at Dawkes.
If you’re a beginner or novice player, you’ll find new Flutes starting from approximately £200, or you can hire a Flute for about £15 per month.
Oboe
The oboe is famous for producing a completely distinct sound, and its ‘A’ is the one that tunes the orchestra. We stock oboes manufactured by Buffet Crampon, Yamaha, and Howarth.

Clarinet
You’ll find the most common clarinet, Bb, at Dawkes, but that’s not all. We also offer a range of A, Eb, alto, bass, and special clarinets. Hire a clarinet from Dawkes for as little as £15 per month or treat yourself to a new Clarinet for about £200. Choose from Bb, A, Eb, alto, bass, and special clarinets.
The Brass
Instruments in the brass section of the orchestra are made of long tubes that have been folded into various shapes. They’re fitted with valves, and one end of the tubes has a wide, bell-shaped opening.
Trombone

The Percussion
The orchestra’s percussion section includes indefinite pitch instruments such as the snare drum, bass drum, and cymbals, as well as tune instruments such as marimba, xylophone, and timpani. Whatever your classical music needs, Dawkes has an instrument for you.
