Choosing well

How to pick a teacher who suits you

Take a trial lesson

Take a trial lesson

Most teachers are happy to do one. It tells you more than any amount of messaging: whether the room works, whether the pace suits, whether you get on.

Teacher and Pupil

Say what you’re aiming for

Grade 5 by summer, playing in a wind band, or just enjoying it on a Sunday. A good teacher will shape lessons around the answer.

Practicing at Home

Ask how they teach

How much practice they expect, whether they follow a syllabus, how they handle exams. There’s no single right answer, only the one that fits you.

Questions worth asking

  • How long are lessons, and how often?
  • What do they charge, and how is it paid?
  • Do they teach at their home, yours, or online?
  • What happens if a lesson is missed?
  • Do they enter pupils for exams or festivals?
  • Can they help you choose or hire an instrument?

Before you book

Checking DBS or safeguarding training is down to you as the pupil or parent. You should also make your own judgement about whether a teacher is right for you, and discuss it with them directly. Dawkes Music Ltd lists teachers as a service to the music community and accepts no liability for these matters.
