This is a beautiful Yamaha YCL-CSGIIIL model professional Bb clarinet. The CSGIII range has been highly praised around the clarinet playing world for its quality of tone, intonation and play-ability. This is the silver plated 'L' model with the low E/F correction key (L in the code).
The CSGIII is responsible for quite a shake up in the pro clarinet market. In its first two years of production here at Dawkes it 'stole' around 30-40% of the pro market share from Buffet which in a market that had been so Buffet dominated and stagnant was quite a coup. There was something about how the instrument played, the core tonal quality was (and is still!) quite beautiful. It allows you to back off and play quietly with a core sound still and when pushed to the louder dynamics it just seems to keep giving you sound to play with.
The L in the code (IIIL) stands for the lever correction key that helps the notoriously difficult low E and F on the clarinet. By the nature of design a Clarinet is a series of compromises and commonly the low E/F can be quite flat - at the expense of keeping 99% of the rest of the instrument much closer with intonation. Various manufactures have attempted modifications, some automatic like Backun and others more manual like Buffet and Yamaha. Perhaps the Yamaha is one of the best options because it does allow manual deployment, in other words when/if you can hear that note needs a slight raise in pitch. Importantly it is also in a sensible position, just below the thumb rest like a low C key on the Bass Clarinet. This tends to feel more comfortable for most than the Buffet system which is an extra key on the right hand cluster.
This particular instrument we have for sale is in near immaculate order. The wood is impeccable and the silver plated keywork is similarly excellent. The case and cover are also nice and clean so this clarinet has been well looked after in it's short life in the last couple of years. Like all new CSGs it is supplied with two barrels, one standard one short.
It's worth mentioning that the CSG benefits from a longer top joint and shorter overall barrel design. This was common in some European production in the past and gives the instrument real stability of intonation and tone due to where the internal bore shaping now resides.
In summary, this is a clean condition CSGIIIL which benefits from the Lever key. If you've not tried a CSG you're in for a treat and this is a good way to save a few hundred pounds on the new equivalent.
