The Yamaha YTS-480 Tenor Saxophone is a popular first upgrade model which offers great longevity and an authoritative tone. This 480 model improves on the old 475 model and it's positioned between the student 280 range and the professional 62 range. We find the YTS-480 to be great value for money for advancing players and/or doublers. This is the classic gold lacquer finish with its traditional look.
The Yamaha YTS-480 Tenor Sax has a slightly broader and fuller sound that the student YTS-280 model. This is primarily due to the more open taper design in the neck which broadens the tone. The YTS-480 also is constructed out of a slightly thicker guage brass compared to the cheaper YTS-280 student model. This extra brass adds a little weight and core resonance to the sound which results in a fuller tone with more projection.
The Yamaha YTS-480 features a hand-engraved bell which adds an element of aesthetic quality. It also features the Yamaha professional neck mechanism which allows players to add custom Yamaha necks onto their 480 as an upgrade later on. This upgrade choice is not possible on the student YTS-280 for example.
Mechanically the YTS-480 Tenor Sax benefits from an improved low B-C# connection which ensures consistent closing for the low C# key to help that low note speak more easily. The left hand seesaw key has also been re-designed to increase playability at speed and provide a much more comfortable transition between that cluster of keys.
In summary, the Yamaha YTS-480 Tenor Saxophone is an excellent upgrade model that could offer everything you ever need in an instrument. The tone of the 480, especially here on Tenor Sax, is authoritative and with plenty of punch. It's a very popular choice here at Dawkes due to the tone, comfort of key layout and longevity.
