How to improve a classic? The Yamaha YTS-62 series has been around for over 20 years. It has been the best selling professional Tenor Saxophone across the world in this time. So Yamaha obviously went to great lengths to be certain that any adjustments they make to to this legendary model will improve it.

So whats new on the YTS-62?

First off, the new 62 style neck. This new neck, or crook as some call it, has a narrower bore than the old G1 neck. The idea here being that the new neck gives a slightly faster and more controlled response. The old G1 neck had quite a broad sound but was a little bit more difficult for the advancing player to control and keep in tune as it had a larger bore, this narrower 62 version moderates this and keeps the tuning scale in line. The narrower bore also gives a more centred or solid core if you will to the sound.

Another technical improvement is the low B/C# connection arm, this now has a longer arm and flatter landing touchpiece to improve the stability of adjustment on the low C#/B. This is a small change that most players may not notice but it can be of use the repair technician setting up the Sax or doing routine maintenance.

As a range the 62 series also benefits from integrated key posts, this is the system of attaching the individual pillars, or posts, to a plate that runs down the instrument. This gives more stability to the instrument over the more simplistic design of soldering each pillar straight onto the body of the instrument. This extra weight also adds some more solidity to the sound.

From an aesthetic point of view this new Yamaha 62 Tenor also has some beautiful new engraving and the case is definitely better looking and more functional than the one it replaces. The new case has an outer pocket and backpack straps, it retains the rigidity needed to protect the Sax and looks great.

In summary there are some moderate changes here to help improve the 62 for the next generation, the changes in the crook will help give the sound a little more warmth and solidity and also for advancing players it will really keep the tuning spot on. These 62 Tenor Saxes really are still the standard bearer in their price range.

Brilliant saxophone and enjoyable to play

First thought on this sax is fantastic. Haven’t played it in an ensemble setting yet but looking forward to doing so.

A beautiful instrument and an absolute joy to play. Having a Yamaha Alto made the brand decision an easy one. This model leapt out both in terms of richness of sound and playability. Although this was not the model I thought I’d end up buying, so far I am so glad I made this choice!

Versatile, a rich tone and and easy blow, a super tenor to play across a range of styles.

Having tried most Tenor Saxophones up to around the £5K mark, in my opinion no other sax gives more for the money. To my ear the tone is as good as any and the playability and quality of build are faultless. All in all Yamaha have do a super job, well done Yamaha.

Lovely sax. Solid construction. Made in Japan.

Downside - can no longer blame my sound on a budget instrument!

Easy to play, makes a nice sound and looks good.
