The Custom EX represents one answer to Yamaha’s pursuit of the ideal saxophone sound and is the result of decades of painstaking research and trials with some of the world’s greatest saxophonists. This is the black lacquered body with gold lacquered keys.
The EX saxes offer smooth key response, blow very comfortably, and deliver a deep, refined sound rich with colour. The EX also provides great flexibility with a wide dynamic range, and stunning projection that fills the hall with an authoritative tone. Although Yamaha mention this model is designed with Classical saxophonists in mind there are a whole host of jazz and contemporary players using the 875EX series and so its important not to put it into a box from that point of view.
This new EX model boasts various new features including:
- The new octave key has a unique ball joint design for a smoother, quicker action.
- The new neck receiver also offers an improvement to the tonal response.
- The bell brace on the body has also been re-designed, it now features a simple two -point contact to allow a free resonance at this point of the instrument.
- There has also been small modifications to the left hand see-saw key to ensure easier playability at speed on the left hand table keys.
In summary, this is Yamaha's premium model that really can do it all in any musical environment. Be it Classical, Jazz, Concert Band, it really is able to perform to the highest level. From the quietest whisper to the loudest roar, the Custom EX has amazing flexibility of tone.

This saxophone is absolutely stunning to play. I have been playing saxophone for over forty years and knew I had some problems with my old sax. One of the most important things for me was to be able to play throughout the range, very softly and this was achieved with ease. The next thing for me was to be able to articulate including double and triple tonguing at all dynamics and again this was very manageable. The final requirement was to play the altissimo notes and this sax really delivers. So you know it plays well. What really impressed me was the look of the sax. I went for the more expensive black lacquer/gold look and it is so cool! Every time I play it I have a smile on me as big as you can possibly have. The sax was not cheap but oh my, it is really good. If you have opportunity to try one out, you will not want to return it. I love it! The sax was purchased from Dawkes in Maidenhead and I have been dealing with this company for nearly thirty years. Their customer care and service is excellent and they have a work shop on site to manage those emergency problems. Dawkes is my first and only stop for dealing with woodwind instruments. Thank you.
