More information on the Clarinet

The clarinet family today is enormous. From the tiny E flat (Eb) and D clarinets to the large sub contrabass clarinet is an amazing sight when seen at a clarinet choir concert.

Usually clarinets are first observed in a symphony orchestra (two soprano (Bb) clarinets, a bass clarinet and possibly an e flat clarinet) or as a solo instrument in a jazz combo.

The clarinet also commands a prodigious repertoire as this instrument we call the clarinet is now virtually 300 years old. The clarinet's classical music repertoire has some of the most significant and great works of all other instrument.

Importantly the clarinet's jazz repertoire covers all aspects of the genre and the folk repertoire can be found just about anywhere you might choose to travel.

Here is a list of clarinets in use today:

  • E flat and D clarinets - symphony orchestras and military bands, clarinet choirs
  • Soprano clarinets - orchestras, jazz ensembles, military bands, folk music such as Klesmer
  • Bass clarinets - orchestras, film music, military bands, solo jazz, clarinet choirs
  • Contra bass clarinets - orchestras, film and tv music, military bands, clarinet choirs
  • Sub contra bass clarinets - orchestra, film and tv music

Clarinets can be made in plastic, ebonite, wood and metal. All of these materials are in use today and are used as and when appropriate for the clarinet's requirements. Almost as soon as it was invented the clarinet became Mozart's favourite instrument.

During the world war in 1940-1945 clarinettists themselves became household names, given the immense popularity of dance bands led by wonderful clarinettists such as Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and Buddy DeFranco, to name just 3.

Clarinet trivia

Dr Who
The big clarinets such as the contra and sub contra bass clarinet found themselves used extensively in some of the Dr Who episodes. They provided both dramatic clarinet timbres and space like mystery sounds that added much to the overall effects before the modern computer techniques of today.

Even Dr Who needed the clarinet!
