Backun describe the Essence as “light in the hands but bold in sound” - it's a striking new design and aims to become the modern French-style clarinet in the marketplace at this price point. This is a busy price point as well, featuring the Buffet Prestige models, Selmer Privilege, and Yamaha CSV-R, so the Backun has some competition.
Featuring a premium unstained grenadilla wood body, like all the pro Backun clarinets this Essence looks stunning with it's silver plated keys and gold plated posts. The grenadilla wood is generally regarded as being brighter and with more of a ‘ping’ vs the softer cocobolo wood option.
For reference, the Essence sits above the professional Backun Q series, but below their famous very top-end MoBa range. It has various technical features which help it stand out against some of the other brands such as the overtly sculpted overcut on the toneholes to compliment the unseen undercuts. These overcuts help the air escape smoothly from the lower toneholes (such as low F and E).
The Essence also benefits from carbon fibre middle joint rings with multi-material tenons. Both these additions are to help re-inforce at this important nodal point and keept the integrity of the clarinet intact. As usual the silver-plating is impeccable on Backun due to their triple-strike process and the outfit is complete with 2 Essence barrels (66mm+65mm) along with the classy and practical Backun case.
The original Backun models that entered the market had a full broad tone which rallied against the more conservative European traditions. More recently Backun have introduced the Q series and now this Essence to appeal squarely to those still routed in the European tradition. The tone feels pliable yet sweet, with a refined resonance. Put simply, it's a joy to play and the intonation is impeccable.
