The new Chedeville range of Clarinet products from the USA are a very welcome addition to the marketplace. The Chedeville name is legendary in Clarinet circles due to the vintage Chedeville mouthpieces of years gone by - originally made in Paris by Charles Chedeville, a contemporary of Vandoren and Selmer.
Chedeville Kaspar CB1 Clarinet Barrel
This is the new Kaspar CB clarinet barrel which is unique in a number of ways. Firstly the stunning design which is a gorgeous hourglass shape on the outside, which also mirrors the internal bore shaping. The outer shaping increases resonance by reducing the thickness of the material at the centre of the barrel. Secondly, this barrel is made of a hard-anodised Aluminium which offers a hugely powerful and resonant sound. The projection is immense and means this barrel would be ideal for jazz/contemporary and any situation where you require extra projection. Perhaps when playing outdoors, in a louder ensemble or as a solo clarinettist. These barrels are slightly lighter than normal wooden ones and so they offer enhanced flexibility of response.
Why Upgrade Your Clarinet Barrel?
The barrel is crucial to the overall tone and response of the Clarinet. As such any change to its material and/or internal design will affect how the instrument plays and performs. In recent years there have been many developments in the internal and external designs of barrels, all of which offer the player a different character to their original.
Some barrels offer a plumper exterior which generally adds depth, weight and resonance to the sound. Others have been heavily trimmed and slimmed down to offer less weight at this nodal point which generally results in a lighter more flexible tone and response. Essentially the barrel can be a great item to change as it can offer a new colour or characteristic to your tone without disturbing your normal mouthpiece/reed set-up which you may be very comfortable with.
A Short History of Chedeville Mouthpieces & Products
These original mouthpieces were made using a very resonant premium rod rubber, the mouthpieces of this era have come to be highly regarded due to their exceptional resonance and tonal quality. More recently the Chedeville name was taken over by Dr L. Omar Henderson Ph.D - a passionate clarinet player and Research Chemist. Dr Henderson set about recreating the original Chedeville rod rubber formulation which involved years of painstaking historical research and state-of-the-art modern advancements in production.
Having recreated this original Chedeville rod rubber, Dr Henderson wanted to find a new owner who could put the rod rubber material into use and who respected and cherished the Chedeville history as he did. So, in 2018, Jody Espina (founder of JodyJazz Mouthpieces) procured the Chedeville name and proprietary rod rubber formula with a mission to bring this legendary sound and performance back for modern players. Now, all the Chedeville products are manufactured from beginning to end in the JodyJazz factory in Savannah, Georgia using high-spec CNC machinery and expert craftspeople.
