How to clean a Saxophone

It's important that you clean your Saxophone thoroughly after you have played it and before storing it in its case.
This is because warm, moist air from your mouth condenses in the instrument, and this moisture can lead to problems with the Saxophone's mechanisms.

Saxophone Pad Savers

A Saxophone Pad Saver is a conical fluffy stick, which you place down the bore of the Saxophone after you have finished playing. It absorbs moisture from the Instrument and prevents pads from sticking hence the name.
Pad Savers are available for Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, and Tenor Saxophones. The bung at the top of the Pad Saver takes the place of the end stop and protecs top of the Instrument.

Also available is a bell brush [right] which ill takes moisture away from the tone holes and bell of the saxophone. It can be stored inside or outside of the instrument.

Saxophone Swabs

Saxophone Swabs have a weight at the end of a piece of string or ribbon. To use them, you put the string down the bell of the Saxophone and turn the Saxophone upside down until the weight falls through the narrow end where the crook fits. By pulling the string, the material is passed through the bore of the Saxophone and the moisture absorbed. Pull throughs can be made of a variety of different materials. The best and most absorbent materials include chamois, micro fibre, silk, cotton and wool.

Using an absorbent saxophone pullthrough as well as other saxophone maintenance accessories will help keep your saxophone 'healthy' and help prevent common problems such as waterlogged and sticking keys. Removing this moisture also helps to prolong the life of the pads, which are crucial for your saxophone to continue working properly and sounding good.

Swabs can be made of a variety of different materials. The best and most absorbent materials include chamois, micro fibre, silk, cotton and wool. It is important to choose a mop or pull through that is sufficiently big enough to clean the circumference of the bore. On the other hand, if the pull through is too large, there is a risk of it becoming stuck in your instrument. Should this occur, do not attempt to cut or 'yank' it out yourself, but seek the help of our repair team, who will be able to remove it safely without causing damage to your instrument.

Saxophone Neck Swabs

The crook or neck of the Saxophone is not easily accessible to clean.
A variety of swabs, brushes and Swabs are available for this purpose.
