This beautiful pre-owned Adolphe Sax model was produced by Selmer Paris in 1922. During the period of 1922-1926 many of these early instruments featured the Adolphe Sax name but were essentially the Selmer Model 22 instruments. This particular example is gold lacquered which we believe to have been re-lacquered at some point in the past. It has been done sensitively and beautifully and as such this Alto looks gorgeous.
The creation of the Model 22/Adolphe Sax models saw the introduction of an Alto to the Selmer range, and because of how well it was received (and what a technical innovation it was at the time) Selmer also went on to add a Bb Soprano, Curved Soprano, Soprano in C and the Tenor in Bb and Tenor in C (latterly referred to as the C Melody). So really it was a jumping off point for the French company and so these models have their own historical importance.
So, what about the tone and this particular Sax. Well, to consider it's nearly 100 years old it's in way better condition than you or I would be! These are still very playable Saxes, ok it's not a MKVI or Balanced Action but that's why its just a fraction of the price of one of those. It does have quite a charming, singing and sweet quality to the sound which is quite focused. The keywork is not quite as fluid as a modern horn but you are rewarded with a thoroughly unique tone that is exceptional for performing music of this era.
This particular example has been pretty well looked after, there are no major bumps or bruises and actually the mechanics feel great. The gold lacquer looks great and the simply shaped keywork hints of the style of the age. Supplied in a new XL ProTec modern case, no mouthpiece is included.
