The most famous Saxophone model ever? Surely so, the Mark VI name has become legendary for Sax players around the world. Many people seek out great examples on Sop, Alto, Tenor and Baritone because of the excellent ergonomics and unique sound.
This is a 1965 low Bb model Mark VI Baritone Sax. The instrument has original lacquer which is in pretty good shape overall, with just some nice looking signs of wear. The instrument has no major marks or bumps to speak of on the tubing, there is just one missing element which is the key guard on the alternate r/hand F# key which is just an aesthetic consideration.
This Bari has been in the ownership of one player for many years and it has been cherished and cared for accordingly. The padding and regulation is all in excellent order and as part of the pre-sale preparations the instrument has been fully checked and set-up in our workshop prior to sale ensuring an easy and consistent blow across the whole range from top to bottom.
You will see from the images this Baritone has previously been used with a 'Jiffy' stand which essentially is a ball-joint stand that you can sit and use the Baritone with to remove the weight. The attachment on the bell is removable but we've currently left it on so the new owner can purchase a stand and use it accordingly. Please note the stand is not included in the outfit.
The keywork feels very well laid out under the fingers and it's no exaggeration to say that 99% of all modern Saxes base their keywork layout on the MKVI models. This low Bb Bari really sings and feels much more vibrant and alive than the somewhat more lumpy sounding low A models. For this reason, many jazz players actually prefer the Low Bb examples and really feel they are very different blowing beasts.
In summary, this is a nice honest example of a used but well cared for and well maintained vintage Bari to low Bb. The neck is in good condition and the various small bits of lacquer loss throughout just add to the original character.
