The Selmer Reference 54 has reshaped the modern perception of the Selmer brand. It was produced to pay homage to the Mark VI, which began production in 1954, and the Reference series was designed to bring a new level of tone and ergonomics to the world's leading saxophone maker.
Selmer had enjoyed success with the Series II and Series III, but many keen players felt the Series II was a little muddy and the Series III too bright, and neither had the slick, positive key action of the best vintage Selmers. So the team in Paris consulted top players and reworked the key sizes, shapes and layout, going back to older designs for the neck and the bow to bell shape. The result is a horn with a rich, vintage-leaning core and a modern, reliable action, at home in jazz, classical or anything in between.
This particular example is in excellent overall condition. The dark gold lacquer is rich and full in tact, with striking engraving on the bell. There are a few tiny marks on the neck that show previous use. Like all our pre-owned saxophones it has been fully checked, set up and prepared in our workshop prior to sale, so you can buy with total confidence.
It is supplied with the original shaped Selmer case, Meyer 5M mouthpiece and Neotech soft sling in blue.
