It's always a pleasure to have a good Selmer MKVI Saxophone in stock. Here we have a late (1975) model with lacquered body and silver plated keywork which is all original.
This Alto feels like a classic Selmer; the light but positive key action, the ergonomic layout that rewards you when playing faster passages of music and the responsive and flexible tone. A high F# key is present on this MKVI which is a nice quality of life feature that caters to players who are used to playing on more modern instruments. For us the MKVI Alto is a real go-er of a Saxophone, it can fly when pushed yet it can be played very subtly. We know of classical and jazz players using these professionally and it's suitable for all genres in-between as well.
The classic Selmer sound is present on this example and it's in very good overall condition with just some light aesthetic wear which is to be expected on a horn that is 50 years old, but there is certainly nothing untoward and actually it's very clean in terms of the lacquer and plating.
There is (and still will be) a lot of talk debating the 'best year' for vintage Selmer MKVI Saxophones. In our opinion (having tried literally hundreds of these over the years) there is no real definitive answer. We prefer to treat each instrument as it comes, we've tried amazing early and late models and some instruments that are from 'classic' years which we think don't perform quite as well.
If owning a piece of Saxophone history appeals to you then why not come on down and try out this excellent example of one of the most legendary saxophone models ever made. We can also arrange a home trial period if you aren't able to make the trip to the shop.
