Selmer Radio Improved c.1934 - Alto Sax (19XX7)

Product Information

This is a beautiful 1934 Selmer Radio Improved Alto Sax in great condition. The instrument has been fully checked and set-up in our Woodwind workshop prior to sale by our experience technicians and comes with a 6 month warranty.

The Radio Improved model from Selmer ran from 1934-1936 when they moved onto the new style Balanced Action. The Radio Improved models marked the end of the first phase of Selmer designs, the bell keys are on the other side for example, and for many the Radio Improved was the best of these first phase models by far. They helped propel Selmer to the heights they experienced in this golden period and had a beautiful singing tone.

This particular model is in very nice condition with only some minor lacquer wear (as per pictures) and silver plated keys. It's perhaps unclear if this is a re-lacquered model or indeed it is original lacquer. It's priced sensibly whichever is the case. We prefer to treat these vintage instruments on how they play and how they sound on an individual basis.

There is a beautiful ability to 'sing' with this Radio Improved which lends itself to crafting a melody, or sitting as first Alto in a swing band. It's hard to describe but it's a clarity and precision of tone that still has sweetness yet projection. Add to that the compact action that feels more nimble than earlier Model 25/Cigar Cutters and you've got a winning combination that offers a contrasting option to the modern saxes in production.

The Sax is supplied in a slimline gig bag which is lightweight and small.

In summary, this is a nice mechanical condition example of this wonderful vintage model and it would suit an advancing player wanting a serious vintage bit of kit or an experienced adult who seeks that legitimate Selmer sound.
