The Selmer Super Balanced Action is the horn that came immediately before the Mark VI, produced in Paris between 1946 and 1955, and it is the instrument on which much of the classic recorded saxophone sound was made. These are genuine vintage collectibles as well as superb playing instruments.
The SBA has a broad, warm core with a slightly looser, more vocal quality than the Mark VI that followed it, and it is prized by jazz players for exactly that. The key layout is a little different to a modern horn but comfortable once you settle into it. Condition and originality matter enormously on an instrument of this age and pedigree.
This particular example has been well-loved during it's life with patches of lacquer wear all over the instrument. The lacquer that remains is a gorgeous dark cognac colour. Most of the lacquer on the crook has worn away. The keywork feels as smooth as it would've been when it was sold brand new in the 50s. The pads are in good condition whilst not being new. Like all our pre-owned instruments it has been fully checked and set up in our workshop prior to sale by one of our experienced technicians, so you can buy with total confidence.
It is supplied with a hard shell box case and NO mouthpiece. At this price it represents a considerable saving on the new equivalent, and it is ready to play from the moment it arrives.
