The Tenor Horn (also called Althorn, or Alto Horn) is a brass instrument. The Tenor Horn is often found in brass bands, and whilst it may not be as popular as some of the other brass instrument (such as its cousin the French Horn) the Tenor Horn is still a popular instrument.

The history of the Tenor Horn

The Tenor Horn is more than 150 years old, and the design of the instrument hasn't changed much during this time. It's thought that the Tenor Horn was invented around the mid-1800s and was created with the intention of adding an alto voice to the saxhorn family.

More about the Tenor Horn

The Tenor Horn is played in Eb and the curved tubing is somewhat familiar, and similar to its other horn cousins. The curved tubing of the Tenor Horn is particularly similar to the French Horn, and the two instruments are often mistaken for the other. Like other members of the horn family, the Tenor Horn has a mouthpiece which is blown into to create the unique sound the instrument is known for. On the other side of the Tenor Horn, there is a large bell, which is where the sound comes out of. Notes and pitches of the Tenor Horn are played by pressing the valves located in the middle of the instrument. The Tenor Horn is also often likened to the large tuba, and because of this, it even has the nickname ‘little tuba' or 'mini tuba'.

Where is the Tenor Horn found in music?

The Tenor Horn is mainly found in brass bands across the globe, especially in the classic English brass band. You'll also find Tenor Horns in orchestras and concert bands, as well as a selection of military bands too. The unique sound of the Tenor Horn makes it a popular instrument and a great addition to any of the musical groups listed above.

Famous Players

There has been a long list of famous Tenor Horn players throughout history, including; Django Bates, Sheona White and Owen Farr.
