Uebel Basset Horn (900-791075)

SKU: CUB-900-791075

Product Information

This is a basset horn in F produced by F.A. Uebel in Germany, and it is a rare thing to find on the second hand market. The basset horn is not an everyday purchase. It has a defined place in the classical repertoire, in Mozart above all but also Dvorak and Mendelssohn, and it has a beautiful voice of its own that sits between the clarinet and the bass clarinet.

The Uebel 900 has a range down to low C, with three thumb operated keys on the bottom joint extending below the low Eb available from the normal pinky keys. It has a metal neck with a straight wooden bell, and an internal bore of 16.8mm, which places it in the medium bore category, the common German design. The lack of credible and affordable new basset horns makes the second hand market a fairly safe place to put your money, and an instrument of this quality should be viewed as a long term purchase rather than a passing one.

This particular example is in great condition with the majority of the silver-plating in tact and the wood is looking great. All pads have been replaced with deluxe white leather pads. Like all our pre-owned instruments it has been fully checked and set up in our workshop prior to sale by one of our experienced technicians, so you can buy with total confidence.

It is supplied with the original plastic hard shell case and mouthpiece. A peg is also provided for players wanting to play standing up without a strap. This particular model also has half open and half plateau keys, so it provides that extra assurance of a seal if you have smaller hands. The serial number (900-791075) suggests a manufacture date of the late 1970s.
