The new Yamaha YBS-480 Baritone Saxophone replaces the old YBS-32 model and brings the Bari Sax range inline with Yamaha's other Sax numbering system. Benefitting from many of the same features as the professional 62 and 82 models, the 480 is slightly lighter and has a very immediate sound from top to bottom.
The YBS-480 benefits from some technical and layout changes compared to the old YBS-32 model. These changes have all been introduced to help the instrument be more agile in performance, more comfortable to hold and play, and to produce and even richer sound.
Key Layout
A newly designed key layout has been introduced to make the feel of the keys more ergonomic for most hand shapes. The keys and mechanism has also been made slightly lighter to make the overall instrument weigh less and to offer even quicker response under the fingers.
New Key Designs
There are various individual key modifications on the new YBS-480 Baritone Saxophone. Working with their Research & Design team and players at many levels, Yamaha have made modifications to the following keys: Front F, Low A, Octave Key, Palm Keys, Upper and Lower Table Keys. Most of these changes have been to help the keys sit more comfortably under the fingers and allow for a more comfortable reach and playing experience.
Overall Balance
Yamaha have modified the strap-ring position to help this Baritone sit more comfortably on a sling or harness. The shorter bell design is not only used to increase the response and ease of the lower notes but combined with the strap-ring position it helps the instrument feel correctly balanced.
Finally, Yamaha have added a peg design. The peg itself is not included with the YBS-480 model but it can be purchased separately giving players the option if they want it or not.
In summary this is a great new upgrade from the old YBS-32 model which had been in service for many years. The new YBS-480 feels better under the fingers, has a more lively and flexible tone and is a great Baritone that will do everything ever needed for the vast majority of players.
