This beautiful Conn Silvertone model was originally designed as a good first or step-up level Sax. They were made in the US in Elkhart Indiana.
The Silvertone range was made over a period of years and often by varying manufacturers. We believe this model is a Buescher stencil and appears to be based on a 1930s Aristocrat model. Due to the supply chain of these horns it's difficult to put an accurate age on it but we believe this looks consistent with a sax that would have been made around 1960. That's where this serial number falls on the Buescher timeline so it's going to be pretty close to that.
Whilst these Silvertone models weren't designed as pro models (like the 6M Alto for example) they do still make a great sound. There's something quite direct about the tone and the unfussy nature of the keywork means there's not a great deal of 'extras' to go wrong or worry about.
We'd suggest this would be a great Alto for an adult moving from a cheap and cheerful student horn but wanting something with a little more character and a unique tone. It will reward you with a punchy and lively sound and can equally be played quite beautifully over a ballad. Certainly more characterful in lots of ways than some modern new Saxes at a similar price and a piece of American instrument manufacturing history still.
