From master craftsman Aaron Drake, this special mouthpiece was conceived through exclusive collaboration with the Phil Woods Estate. Highly regarded throughout his life as a Saxophone Legend, Phil Woods performances enthralled many and left an indelible inscription on the landscape of jazz music.

The Phil Woods Story

Nicknamed 'The New Bird' by his peers, Woods was inspired by Charlie Parker and Benny Carter and went on to create his own unique sound and musical language. For much of his career Phil Woods played an un-modified New York Meyer 5M given to him by a friend in the 1950's. The Drake Phil Woods model mouthpiece is an exact reproduction of this treasured piece of history.

How Does This Mouthpiece Play?

This mouthpiece is a quintessential straight-ahead jazz mouthpiece. The geometry is identical to Phil's mouthpiece and with the use of modern materials and design technology it can now be produced with impeccable accuracy and consistency.

This Phil Woods mouthpiece model offers a pleasant amount of resistance which helps create a warm, rich tone with ping and projection when required. The overall response is super consistent throughout the range of the Sax and the tone evokes the spirit of the most classic vintage ebonite models of the golden era of jazz.

The Outfit

This mouthpiece comes with a custom-fit Drake quad point ligature which is designed to allow maximum resonance and vibration of the reed on the mouthpiece table/facing. Most standard ligatures designed for normal size ebonite models will also fit this mouthpiece. So if you already have a ligature you are in love with you could use it on this model.

Each mouthpiece is hand-made by master artisan Aaron Drake and receives its own serial number. It's also tastefully engraved with Phil Woods' signature and the Drake trademark.

Available in tip openings of: #5 (Phil Woods Original) / #6 (.080') and #7 (.085')
