The JazzLab Silencer MKII for Sax and Clarinet has multiple uses. As the name suggests, it can be used as a silencing tool, or indeed it can also be an integral practice aid to help strengthen your embouchure muscles and develop lip control. It comes with the relevant adaptors for Sop, Alto, Tenor, Bari Sax + Clarinet.
What does it do?
In the fist instance, as a silencer, the product allows you to put your mouthpiece and reed on it, as you would a crook, and blow normally. You may be travelling, in a shared accommodation or anywhere else where perhaps getting your Saxophone out and playing may not be possible but you want to do some form of practice without creating much noise.
In these situations the Silencer allows you to do that practice blowing without creating any loud noises - try blowing on your mouthpiece and reed without anything covering it and you'll find it's pretty loud. However, using the Silencer will reduce the audible output by 14-20 decibels, in other words making the volume heard by other people between 5 and 10 times quieter.
The second instance is using the Silencer as an aid to your general practice. Some players use these tools to help build their embouchure strength. For example spending 5-10 mins a day working through the supplied exercise back can help build your muscles to strengthen your tone and give you more control over pitch and the ability to bend notes for example.
What is it made of?
The Silencer is made of high quality plastic that makes it easy to handle and clean. It consists of three parts; the housing, the cap and the insertion. These can be easily dissembled after use to be rinsed with water.
In summary, this Silencer allows you to take your practice with you. If you're on the train, waiting somewhere, in a hotel room - whatever it may be. Spending 5-10 minutes each day working through the supplied exercises will also help strengthen your embouchure, giving you a stronger more controllable sound on your instrument.
