The JodyJazz HR* CUSTOM DARK Alto eliminates the unpleasant highs often associated with bright alto mouthpieces whilst retaining the pop, feedback, and easy response that alto players love. Built from JodyJazz's proprietary Chedeville® Rubber—a softer, purer hard rubber formula—the CUSTOM DARK delivers a warm, dark tone with genuine complexity. The result is a beautiful alto mouthpiece with rounded warmth across all registers without sacrifice of projection.
The mouthpiece features a large round chamber with curved sidewalls that add harmonic richness, paired with a heavy gold-plated brass band on the shank that boosts overtones. The expertly hand-finished rollover baffle provides responsive articulation and allows players to shape their tone with ease. Players report a fat, singing bottom end with shapeable power on top, exceptional intonation, and easy access across the full range.
The CUSTOM DARK Alto comes with a deluxe mouthpiece pouch and is available in a variety of sizes. Note that a ligature is not included and should be purchased separately. I purchased 2 of these alto mouthpieces with 5 and 6 tip openings under the 14-day trial arrangement. They arrived promptly and I was able to test them thoroughly against each other and my existing Meyer 5. It is great to be able to do this in the comfort of your home with plenty of time and opportunity to record etc. They both sounded great, with very mellow lower register and just a bit less brightness at the top end but to be fair, this took a lot of listening back at recordings. I ultimately decided on the 6 for perhaps slightly more flexibility of technique, but it was a close call. Service from Dawkes was great, with advice up front over the phone, patches on the mouthpieces when they arrived, and no-hassle fast refund on the returned item. All I had to do was send it back by a tracked and preferably insured delivery service (cost me £10) and pay a £5 sanitising/restocking fee. So to trial 2 £311 mouthpieces, and return one of them, this was definitely worthwhile!
