The NEW JodyJazz HR* Custom Dark mouthpiece for Alto has been specially designed to honour the rich, full tone that many Alto players seek. The internal modifications help 'roll off' some of the sparkling high end of the Alto Sax and help keep the sound rich and dark.Produced with the JodyJazz Chedeville ebonite which offers a softer, richer and darker tone, this HR* Custom Dark is great for players who want to loose the shrill, piercing edge of an Alto Sax sound. Don't be fooled, this mouthpiece still has plenty of 'go' and projection when required. However, when playing normally it offers a real density and thickness to the tone.
The side walls are rounded and this model has a large deep chamber to help provide the warmth of tone. Unlike the HR* Dark Tenor, this Alto still has a little bump in the baffle to help kick back some vibrancy and feedback to the player. The gold plated brass tone ring attached to the shank adds weight physically and tonally.

I purchased 2 of these alto mouthpieces with 5 and 6 tip openings under the 14-day trial arrangement. They arrived promptly and I was able to test them thoroughly against each other and my existing Meyer 5. It is great to be able to do this in the comfort of your home with plenty of time and opportunity to record etc. They both sounded great, with very mellow lower register and just a bit less brightness at the top end but to be fair, this took a lot of listening back at recordings. I ultimately decided on the 6 for perhaps slightly more flexibility of technique, but it was a close call. Service from Dawkes was great, with advice up front over the phone, patches on the mouthpieces when they arrived, and no-hassle fast refund on the returned item. All I had to do was send it back by a tracked and preferably insured delivery service (cost me £10) and pay a £5 sanitising/restocking fee. So to trial 2 £311 mouthpieces, and return one of them, this was definitely worthwhile!
