These are the smoothest, fastest cutting tone hole files you can buy. Nothing compares to diamonds. We love this tool at Dawkes.
The Jim Schmidt rotary tone hole file set comes with 6 machined discs/pilots ranging from 12mm to 50mm in diameter (suitable for Altos & Tenor saxophones - additional larger discs for Baritone available on request)
To file down high spots of a tone hole, the file is placed on the tonehole and turned with the specially designed T-shaped handle while applying pressure. The image shows an assembled tone hole file and smaller disc for locating in the tonehole. The ball end allen wrench driver prevents tilting of the file on the tonehole, keeping it dead flat and allowing even pressure to be exerted on the tone hole. We like to draw over the surface of the tone hole with black marker pen before starting to file - you can keep checking for the moment where no more black marker is visible on the contact surface of the tone hole and you know your tone hole is perfectly flat.
The JS tone hole files are essential for precision Saxophone work, when working on vintage horns or working with very firm pads. Makes extremely fast and neat work of a job that could otherwise take up hours of your working day.
This kit is 'medium' grit which is most versatile - also available in 'fine' grit on request.
Additional pilots are available separately. The diamond faces of the tone hole files are also available separately when they eventually need to be replaced.
