This is a beautiful 1942 Selmer Balanced Action Alto Sax in silver plate. The instrument has been fully checked and set-up in our Woodwind workshop prior to sale by our experience technicians and comes with a 6 month warranty.
The Balanced Action model from Selmer ran from 1936-1948 when they moved onto the Super Action. The Balanced Action was something of an innovative design and it is really the first Selmer model to have what we would now regard as the 'modern layout' in terms of key design and it was this new ergonomic feel that helped propel Selmer to the heights they experienced in this golden period.
This particular model is in very nice condition with only some routine plating wear (as per pictures). It's been fitted with black pads and has been well maintained by its previous owner in our workshop here at Dawkes. There is no doubt that these Balanced Action models have a particular beauty of tone that is quite unique compared to how a modern Sax generally performs.
There is a beautiful ability to 'sing' with this Balanced Action which lends itself to crafting a melody, or sitting as first Alto in a swing band. It's hard to describe but it's a clarity and precision of tone that still has sweetness yet projection. Add to that the absolute feather light action that just feels so nimble and you've got a winning combination that offers a contrasting option to the modern saxes in production.
The Sax is supplied in a modern Hiscox case which is ideal for storing it safely and daily travelling. It does also come with the original case which whilst showing its age, is structurally sound and is designed to carry a flute and clarinet within the lid.
In summary, this is a nice mechanical condition example of this wonderful vintage model and it would suit an advancing player wanting a serious vintage bit of kit or an experienced adult who seeks that legitimate Selmer sound.
