This is a great playing Selmer Model 26 Tenor Saxophone from 1927. The Model 26 was introduced in the spring of 1926 and it was an updated and improved version of the previous Model 22. The improvements were mainly in key positioning to help facilitate faster passages.
At this time Selmer generally produced around 1,500 instruments per year. In terms of general serial number positioning the Model 26 instruments started around the 4000 serial no. mark and ran upto around 8000. This places ours around the mid-zone of 1927. It's amazing to think something that was made nearly 100 years ago is still in such excellent working order and offering musicians a fantastically unique tone.
This particular instrument has been fully checked and serviced in our workshop prior to sale. Our experienced technicians have stripped various parts of the Sax to clean, re-lubricate and optimise the mechanism of this vintage beauty. As you would expect there are signs of aesthetic wear on an instrument of this age, but more importantly all the mechanicals, pads, corks and regulation has been taken care of in our workshop set-up. The instrument has a really authentic early jazz tone and it would be well suited to playing in that genre.
