Backun Bass Clarinets – The Ultimate Guide: Alpha vs Q series
17th December 2025The moment has arrived, Backun have answered our wishes and have finally created an ABS Bass Clarinet to Low C. Previously, all low C models have been made in grenadilla wood which contributes to a high cost. Backun have bought the “lowest notes of the bass clarinet to the masses” by creating this lightweight and affordable design.
The Backun Bass Clarinet range includes; a Q Series wooden model to low C, and an Alpha ABS model to low Eb and low C. This the first high-quality synthetic bass clarinet down to low C to exist. I know, we are excited too!

Backun Bass Clarinets – The Overview:
What is possibly most exciting about the Alpha bass clarinet range, is that when you look at the compositional design overview of both the Alpha and Q series, there is very little difference to detect.
Both ranges feature:
- The benefits of Backun’s triple registered mechanism. This improves the intonation across the whole range of the instrument (and no more stuffy Bb!)
- A locking-middle section that makes assembly of the instrument quick and consistent. (Ideal for students and professionals to ensure the ideal position for performance every time.)
- Ergonomic thumb key optimises those clunky register shifts.
- Adjustable thumb rest that supports the easy reach of the low Eb, C# and C thumb keys, which are roller enhanced to aid in smoother technique.
- Triple-strike plating in the keys for an incredibly durable and aesthetic finish.
- Articulated C# G# mechanism to suit the player.
- Adjustment screws to enable players to find their optimal set up.
Backun have made sure that the Alpha range stands strong against their competitors such as Buffet and Selmer. They’ve ensured quality but with a price that doesn’t make your eyes water.
One difference is in the pads – the Alpha sports custom black valentino pads which are great for affordability and durability. Whereas, the Q series use custom leather pads, which are a premium option providing a more legato feel when playing.
So, here lies the main difference between the models: the materials.

Materials: The lowdown
Prices vary massively between the Alpha and Q series and the main difference is in the materials used. But what difference do the materials make?
Synthetic: The Alpha range is made out of a synthetic material, making the design lightweight (always a benefit with the heavier weight of bass clarinets.) By making these clarinets in plastic, as well as being more affordable, they provide good durability as they withstand the moisture with less maintenance than wooden instruments, and are great for projection.
Then over to the Q Series, Backun offers two varieties of exotic hardwood bass clarinets:
Grenadilla: First you have African grenadilla, one of the most common woods used for instruments. Dark black or brown in colour, grenadilla offers a brighter, vibrant tone and excellent projection, effortlessly achieving a large body of sound making it ideal for band or orchestra settings.
Cocobolo: Next to this, we have cocobolo (pic below). A rich ruby red in colour, this wood produces a warm, dark tone. The slightly softer density means that it absorbs the sound a bit more, offering a more pure and refined voice. These subtleties in the sound help blend seamlessly with others, making it perfect for chamber or solo work.

Brass vs nickel-silver: We also see a difference of metals in the set-up. For example, the Alpha series features a brass neck and bell, offering a vibrant tone and easy projection, while the Q series uses nickel-silver for a deeper, more resonant sound.
Keywork: The keywork for the Alpha models are available in either nickel or silver plated. Whereas in the Q series you have a choice of silver in the grenadilla, or gold posts with silver keys in both finishes. The different metals affect the instrument’s weight which alter the sound slightly. For example, the silver plating produces a slightly darker tone compared to the lighter nickel, but these effects are marginal on the scale of things.

Backun Bass Clarinets – In summary:
The Alpha range is a truly great, budget- friendly addition to the lower end of bass clarinets. Backun have delivered something that boasts professional features to mirror their pro instruments, whilst ensuring the price remains accessible.
The Q series meanwhile offers professional players an exciting new alternative to the previously revered Buffet and Selmer models. With the various technical optimisations that Backun have brought to the scene, we feel the Q series will go on to define the new standard for professional Bass Clarinets.
