BG Ligatures for Saxophone: Which One Is Right for You?

10th March 2026

If you’re a saxophone player, your ligature matters more than you might think. In this post and the accompanying video , pro player, Jimmy Merchant breaks down the full BG ligature range, explaining what makes each one unique and how to find the right match for your reed, mouthpiece, and playing style.

Whether you’re a beginner just starting out or a seasoned professional looking to fine-tune your setup, there’s a BG ligature built for you.

Why Your Ligature Matters

A ligature isn’t just a piece of hardware that holds your reed in place. The material, weight, and tension of a ligature directly affects how freely your reed vibrates – and that has a real impact on your tone, response, and how long your reeds last.

One standout feature across the entire BG range is that none of their ligatures overtighten the reed. Overtightening causes strain and can lead to reed breakage over time. BG ligatures are designed to hold the reed securely while preserving its natural movement, boosting the longevity of every reed you play.

BG Flex Ligature

Best for: Beginners and players using harder reeds

The BG Flex is a fabric ligature, and its defining quality is its lightweight, thin material – making it one of the most free-blowing ligatures in the range. Because the fabric is so fine, there’s minimal resistance against the reed, which means the reed can vibrate as freely as possible on the mouthpiece.

For new students, this is a fantastic confidence boost. A free-blowing setup makes it easier to produce a full, responsive sound from the start, which is hugely encouraging when you’re still developing your embouchure and technique.

For more experienced players using a harder reed, the Flex is equally valuable. A harder reed already provides natural resistance, so pairing it with a free-blowing ligature like the Flex creates a well-balanced setup that responds without feeling stuffy or restricted.

BG Standard Ligature

Best for: Advancing players using softer reeds who need more resistance

Also made from fabric, the BG Standard uses a thicker material than the Flex – and on the inside, there’s a rubber plate that sits against the reed. This creates more resistance in the setup.

If you’re playing on a softer reed that feels a little too easy or lacks projection, the Standard can help bring some balance back to your sound. The added resistance gives the reed something to push against, resulting in a fuller, more controlled tone.

BG Super Revelation Ligature

Best for: Players who want the best of both fabric and metal

The Super Revelation is a hybrid ligature. On the outside, it uses the same fabric as the Standard, but inside, instead of a rubber plate, there’s a 24-karat gold plate.

This combination gives you the warmth and flexibility of a fabric ligature alongside the resonance and brightness associated with metal ligatures. If you’ve always been curious about metal ligs but love the feel of fabric, the Super Revelation offers the best of both worlds without having to compromise.

BG Tradition Ligature

Best for: Players who prefer metal but want something lighter than usual

The BG Tradition is a metal ligature, available in five different finishes: gold lacquer, gold plated, silver, rose gold, and black lacquer. There’s a finish to suit every taste and aesthetic.

Jimmy is a particular fan of this one – and here’s why. Metal ligatures can sometimes add noticeable weight to your setup, which affects the way the instrument responds and can make it feel heavier and more resistant. The BG Tradition uses a lighter metal construction, meaning it stays more free-blowing than most metal ligatures on the market. You get the character of a metal lig without sacrificing ease of play.

BG Duo Ligature

Best for: Players looking for tonal balance across all registers – Jimmy’s everyday choice.

The BG Duo is Jimmy’s go-to ligature for everyday playing, and he uses it in rose gold. As with the BG Tradition lig, there are also the same 5 finishes to choose from.

The rose gold finish isn’t just about looks – Jimmy finds it delivers a balanced tone across the full range of the saxophone, including the high register. For commercial playing, that matters. You want the high octaves to sizzle and cut through without becoming shrill or losing control, and the Duo consistently delivers that.

One ligature to rule them all: The ligature is named ‘Duo’ due to the fact it can be used between both alto saxophone and Bb clarinet. Perfect for consistency and ease across your instruments!

There’s also a thoughtful practical feature: underneath the ligature, where it makes contact with the mouthpiece, rubberised pads protect the mouthpiece surface as you tighten the lig. No scratches, no scuffs – just a secure, clean fit every time.

In the video, you can hear the Duo paired with Jimmy’s Jody Jazz mouthpiece of choice. Give it a listen and judge the tone for yourself.

Finding the Right BG Ligature for Your Setup

Here’s a quick summary to help you decide:

  • BG Flex – Free-blowing fabric; great for beginners or harder reeds
  • BG Standard – Thicker fabric with rubber plate; adds resistance for softer reeds
  • BG Super Revelation – Hybrid fabric and 24k gold plate; best of fabric and metal
  • BG Tradition – Lightweight metal in five finishes; free-blowing for a metal lig
  • BG Duo – Balanced tone, rubberised mouthpiece protection; Jimmy’s everyday pick

Every player’s setup is different. The reed you use, your mouthpiece, and your personal sound concept all play a role in which ligature will work best for you. The best way to find your match is to experiment and the BG range gives you plenty of excellent options to explore.
