Flute Playing Videos: TONE EXERCISE with Krzysztof Kaczka (2/10)

23rd June 2018

This is the second of a ten part video series we recorded with top international flautist Krzysztof Kaczka. Throughout the videos Krzysztof will talk about various techniques and exercises to help improve your flute playing, whatever your level.

2. Flute Playing – Tone Exercise

Following on from our first video (warm up) we’re now working on the quality of sound. It’s very easy to get head down into the music straight away, especially if we’re still trying to play all the right notes! However, fundamentally one of the main reasons to play is to try and make a beautiful sound, after all it’s what brings life and character to the music you are performing.

To help build your sound, or tone, it’s important to have a strong air column and also a good embouchure. The exercise Krzysztof runs through in the video is simple in terms of notes to play so you can really concentrate on trying to blow the harmonics and work on the delivery of air as he outlines. Imagine if you could just make an extra 5-10 minutes for this sort of exercise each time you practice, it would really build your sound within a few weeks for sure.

We’ll be back soon with the third video so stay tuned to our Flute Newsletters for the latest release. Many thanks to Pearl Flutes for supporting this video series.
